How to Create a Ballet Bun
General Directions:
Step 1: Comb hair smooth. Make a pony tail at the center back of the head. Dancers with curly/textured hair do not need to have flat hair, just controlled hair. If needed you may want to use a small amount of water to help with this step.
Step 2: Twist the hair into a long rope all the way to the end.
Step 3: Wrap the hair around the center of the pony tail. Each new coil should wrap around the previous coil to stay against the head.
Step 4: Secure with several normal size bobbi pins. To use a bobbi pin, slightly separate it and push into hair near the scalp. The pin should catch both the hair in the bun and the hair on the scalp. Try to catch the hair elastic in several of the pins as well to help secure the bun. An invisible hair net can be used to help secure any hairs that don't want to stay in the bun.

For Super Short Hair:
Before Beginning: Purchase a clip in hair extension in your child's hair color such as this one from amazon.com (Diforbeauty 20" curly). Cut the extension as needed to have one or two clips per piece - you will use two pieces. You can reuse these many times, and put the unused portion away to use at a later date. Please note, you may need to sew the extension at the cut to keep it from unraveling.
Step 1: Comb hair back and get as much as possible into a small pony tail at the center back of the head (use a small hair elastic). Using hair clips the same color as your dancer's hair, clip back all hairs that don't catch in the ponytail. You may need hair spray, gel or mousse to help keep the hair in place.
***** Please note: If ALL of the hair does not catch in the ponytail, you will want to let it grow out enough so that it will all go into the ponytail by photo day. *****
Step 2: Clip the hair extension on the scalp on either side of the ponytail, as close to the hair elastic as possible. Twist the hair into a long rope all the way to the end.
Step 3 and 4: Follow steps 3 and 4 above.
For a Recital, Competition, or Other Performance:
A: Soak hair on top of head with hair gel before "Step 1".
B: Soak hair in ponytail with hair gel before "Step 2".
C: If your dancer still has hairs popping out of the bun, use an "invisible hair net" over the bun to contain the stray hairs. Miss Zachari can show you how to use this in class if you decide to get one.
