Nutcracker Cast of Characters
Pas de Deux Dance Studio
Most rehearsals are scheduled by the scene, so once you have received your role, you will
know your required
rehearsal times.  Dancers cast for parts listed under "Full Show" must be
available for all of the scene's rehearsal times since their specific times will change from week
to week based on where we are at in rehearsals for each scene.

Full Show

Clara:  Ballet II or higher dancer, must be able to execute a clean
pirouette to the right, must be able to act happy, annoyed, angry,
surprised and scared; should look around 11-14 years old, hair
should reach below shoulders when curled, Pointe experience
preferred but not required


                                    Drosselmeyer / Sugar Plum Fairy:  Ballet IV or
                                    higher dancer, Pointe II or higher, with graceful,
                                    light footwork; must be able to act mysterious;
                                    should look like an adult, hair in a nice bun





                         Nutcracker Prince: preferably Ballet III or higher but all ability levels will             
                          be considered, must be stiff as the Nutcracker but natural as the Prince           
                          and able to show a range of emotions; should look like a young adult
              
                          This character will not be in Party Scene rehearsals




The Party Scene

Clara's Sister:  Ballet I or higher dancer, must be able to act: happy,
sad, and impish; should look around 8 years old, hair should be
shoulder length or longer when curled


                                    Clara's Parents:  Non-Ballet dancers, must be able to act happy,
                                    disapproving and supportive; must look like adults, mother should
                                    have hair long enough to put in an updo.



Clara's Friends:  Ballet II or higher dancers, must be able to act
happy and surprised; should look around age 10 - age 15, hair
should be at least shoulder length when curled




                                          Sister's Friends:  Preliminary Ballet II / Ballet I and higher
                                          dancers, must be able to act happy and surprised; should look
                                          around age 5 - age 8, hair should be at least shoulder length
                                          when curled.



Parents' Friends:  Non-Ballet dancers, must be able to act concerned,
disapproving and supportive; must look like adults, women should
have hair long enough to put in an updo


                                     Butler and Maid: Non-Dancers, must be able to stay expressionless
                                     at times but also act frustrated; should look like older teenagers or
                                     adults, maid's hair in a nice bun




Dolls:  Ballet I or higher dancers, ability to freeze facial expressions and remain stiff, will be
carried into the party by party adults; should be under 4'5", hair in buns.







The Battle

                                     Mice:  Ballet I or higher dancers, should be curious and able to
                                     scurry, will fight soldiers, should be able to act alternately happy
                                     and angry, as well as sad; should be under 4'5", hair in buns.



Toy Soldiers:  Ballet I or higher dancers, should be stiff and able
to be devoid of emotion, as well as able to act alternately happy,
angry and sad, will fight mice; should be under 5', hair in buns.



                                    Mouse Queen: Ballet III or higher dancer, Pointe II or higher                   
                                     dancer, should be able to act gleeful and angry; older teenager            
                                     or adult, hair in a ballet bun.




Cloak Bearer:  Age 7 - 10, hair in a bun.

Land of Snows

Snowflakes:  Ballet III or higher, hair in ballet buns





China:  Ballet III or higher dancer, preferably Pointe II or higher, hair in a ballet bun

Spain: Ballet III or higher dancer, preferably Pointe II or higher, hair in a ballet bun

Arabia:  Ballet III or higher, must be extremely flexible, hair in a ballet bun

Russia: Ballet III or higher, preferably Pointe I or higher, hair in a ballet bun

Reed Pipe: Ballet III or higher, preferably Pointe II or higher, hair in a ballet bun

Polichinelles: Ballet III or higher, preferably Pointe II or higher, hair in a ballet bun











Flowers:  Dancer of all ages, easier part Preliminary Ballet II or higher and under 4'5", harder
part Ballet II or higher and 4'8" or taller, hair in ballet buns








Flower Bearers: students at Pas de Deux Dance Studio who wanted to be a part of the
production but were unable to commit to being a part of the cast, under 4'9" tall, give flowers
to the soloists during cast bows, rehearsals during November as well as the tech and dress
rehearsals are required, there is no participation fee as these dancers are handpicked after
the dance season begins, hair in ballet buns
